JACKSONVILLE – Nick Crawford went 3-for-5, while Andrew Manning drove in three runs to lead UAB to a 10-4 win over Jacksonville State in college baseball Tuesday evening.
Mitch Kloskowski (1-0) scattered five hits over five innings on the mound to earn his first win of the season for the Blazers. JSU's Tanner Freshour (0-1) gave up just two hits, but allowed four runs and walked four to get stuck with the loss.
The Gamecocks (0-4) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a RBI by Todd Cunningham, but the Blazers tied the game in the second inning on a sacrifice fly by Digger Towe.
UAB (3-1) pushed across five runs in the fourth inning, thanks to a pair of two-RBI doubles by Andrew Manning and Jonathan Merritt, while Jamal Austin drove in another run to give the Blazers a 6-1 lead.
Alabama-Birmingham scored a run in each of the next four innings, while the Gamecocks scored one in the fifth inning on a Steven Leach RBI double and two more in the seventh on a two-RBI triple by Leach for the final margin.
Leach, from Decatur, led the Gamecocks at the plate by finishing 3-for-4 with three RBI, while Bert Smith also added three hits and scored twice.
Jacksonville State returns to action with a three-game series this weekend at Middle Tennessee. Friday's game is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m., while Saturday's game will start at 2 p.m. and Sunday's finale will begin at 1 p.m.
