JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State softball team will host South Alabama at 2 p.m. for a single game at University Field. Admission is free fro all fans.
The Gamecocks (15-7, 2-0 Ohio Valley Conference) will take a one-game break from league play when they host the upstart Jaguars (12-15-1, 0-3 Sun Belt Conference), who are in just their third season of softball.
Jacksonville State has won its last three, including a doubleheader sweep of Austin Peay to open OVC play on Sunday afternoon. The Gamecocks will head to Nashville after Thursday's game to get ready for a three-game conference series at Tennessee State starting on Friday.
The duo of junior Nikki Prier and Allie Barker has been on a tear for the Gamecocks so far this season. Prier, a Raleigh, N.C., native, is batting a team-high .424, while Barker, a native of Gadsden, Ala., is on her heels with a .423 average. Barker (5) and Prier (4) have also combined for nine of the Gamecocks' 15 home runs in 2009.
The Jaguars are led by Tara Donaldson, whose.392 average leads a group of four players that are batting over .300.
The two teams met on Feb. 7 in Mobile in the USA Jaguar Invitational, when the Gamecocks claimed a 6-2 win behind an 11-hit offensive attack and a two-hit effort in the circle from senior Karla Pittman.
