COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – Michael Alcorn had a career-high 12 strikeouts to lead Tennessee Tech to a 6-4 win over Jacksonville State as the Golden Eagles earned the Ohio Valley Conference sweep on Sunday.
Alcorn scattered seven hits and threw 142 pitches to earn the complete-game win. Alcorn retired 16 batters in a row from the fourth through eighth innings and walked just one. JSU's Ben Tootle (3-3) got stuck with the loss, despite allowing just one hit and recording seven strikeouts.
Daniel Adamson gave the Gamecocks a 1-0 lead after driving in the first run of the game in the top of the first inning.
Jax State extended the lead in the third inning after Steven Leach led off with a single and stole second. Adamson followed with a RBI single to left center to score Leach as the Gamecocks took a 2-0 lead.
Tech got on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning, taking advantage of five walks in the inning to take the lead. Alex Henry, Chad Oberaker, Ben Burgess and Chad Hayes each drove in a run during the inning to give Tech the lead for good.
The Gamecocks pushed across two runs in the top of the eighth inning after Cunningham singled up the middle and Kyle Bluestein slapped a two-run home run over the left field wall for the final margin.
Cunningham led the Gamecocks at the plate with three hits, while Leach added two hits. Ben Burgess had a pair of hits to lead Tech.
Jacksonville State returns to action on Tuesday in Tuscaloosa against No. 26 Alabama. Game time is set for 6:30 p.m. at Sewell-Thomas Stadium.
