BIRMINGHAM – Jamal Austin had three hits and Jonathan Merritt drove in three runs to lead UAB to an 8-5 win over Jacksonville State at Young Memorial Field on Wednesday.
Mark McKinley (1-0) struck out five of the seven batters he faced to earn his first win of the season as five UAB pitchers finished with 12 total strikeouts. JSU's Jordan Beistline (7-2) gave up three hits and three runs to get stuck with the loss for the Gamecocks in relief.
UAB (27-21) jumped out to an early 4-0 lead after scoring a run in the first and second inning, before pushing across two runs in the third inning.
The Gamecocks (28-17) rallied to score three runs in the fourth inning after Daniel Adamson scored on a wild pitch and Jay Davis had a two-RBI single to right field to cut the lead to 4-3.
Jax State tied the game in the sixth inning after Jake Welch scored on a wild pitch to knot the game at 4-4.
The Blazers took the lead for good in the seventh inning on a sacrifice fly by Merritt, while Brint Hardy and Nick Crawford both scored on JSU throwing errors as UAB built a 7-4 lead.
UAB added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth inning as Austin Taylor scored on the fourth Jax State error of the night to give the Blazers an 8-4 lead.
The Gamecocks scored their final run of the night on a RBI single by Davis in the ninth inning, but could get no closer.

Jacksonville State returns to Ohio Valley Conference action with a three-game series at Tennessee Tech. Saturday's double-header is scheduled for 1 p.m., while Sunday's single-game will also start at 1 p.m.
