Perrilloux Carries Gamecocks to 45-13 Win at Alabama A&M

FINAL STATS | POSTGAME NOTES

NORMAL – Ryan Perrilloux rushed for two touchdowns and threw for three more to lead Jacksonville State to a 45-13 win over Alabama A&M on Saturday at Louis Crews Stadium.

Perrilloux completed 12-of-23 passes for 293 yards while rushing nine times for 11 yards on the night. The LaPlace, La., native became the first player to have two rushing and three passing touchdowns in a single game in JSU's Division I history and was the first Gamecock to account for five touchdowns in a game since Rondy Rogers ran for five on Oct. 31, 2001.

The Gamecocks (1-2) had 494 yards of total offense on the night, 177 on the ground and 317 through the air. The total offense output was the most for the Gamecocks since JSU racked up 511 against Eastern Kentucky on September 22, 2007.

Junior Jamal Young ran for 58 yards on seven carries to lead the Gamecocks' rushing attack, while Jahron Brown and Calvin Middleton added 42 and 40 yards, respectively.

Perrilloux found eight different receivers in the game, with James Shaw hauling in four passes for 71 yards, both team highs. La'Ray Williams had a pair of catches for 70 yards and his first career score, while Alan Bonner also grabbed his first career touchdown reception. Senior James Wilkerson had one catch, a 59-yard touchdown strike from Perrilloux.

Bonner also had a big night returning punts for JSU. The Newnan, Ga., native returned four punts for a total of 92 yards, including a 64-yard return for a touchdown in the fourth quarter. It was the Gamecocks' first punt return for a score since Nov. 18, 2006, when Clay Green returned one for a touchdown at Eastern Illinois.

The Bulldogs managed just 257 yards of total offense, the majority of which came from quarterback Kevin Atkins. The AAMU signal caller threw for 118 yards, while picking up 29 yards on nine rushes.

Defensively, the Gamecocks continued their trend of falling on loose balls, picking up three fumbles for the third-straight game. They entered the week leading the nation in fumbles recovered and all but secured the national lead in that category for at least another week. Their nine fumble recoveries over the first three games marks the most in a three-game span since 1997, when the Gamecocks picked up 12 in a three-game stretch.

The Gamecocks scored on their first two offensive possessions and never looked back before claiming their fourth-straight and the 12th in the last 13 meetings with AAMU (2-1), improving the Gamecocks to 22-2-2 in the all-time series.

Wilkerson returned the opening kickoff 40-yards to put the Gamecocks deep in Bulldog territory to start the game. The Gamecocks used just four plays to drive the final 26 yards, scoring on a Perrilloux 11-yard run. Patrick Tatum's PAT gave JSU a 7-0 lead with 13:21 left in the first quarter. The 99 seconds it took the Gamecocks to draw first blood marked their earliest score in eight games.

JSU started its second possession in the shadows of its own goal after Chance Wilson's punt pinned the Gamecocks at their own four. Perrilloux completed all three of his passes on the drive, culminating a 56-yard touchdown pass to Bonner to cap the drive. Tatum kicked the PAT to give JSU a 14-0 lead at the 9:26 mark of the first quarter.

AAMU finally got on the board with 10:27 to play in the second quarter, when Jeremy Licea made a 38-yard field goal to cut the JSU lead to 14-3.

Rodney Garrott recovered an Alabama A&M fumble at the AAM 49 to set up the Gamecocks' next score. Perrilloux completed a 34-yard pass to James Shaw to give JSU a first and goal at the AAM one and then capped the seven-play, 49-yard drive with a one-yard run on the next play. Tatum's PAT pushed the lead to 21-3 with 4:31 left in the half.

The Bulldogs fumbled the opening kickoff in the second half and Eric Russell scooped it up to put JSU in business deep in AAMU territory. The Gamecocks had to settle for a 37-yard Tatum field goal that gave them a 24-3 lead less than 90 seconds into the third quarter.

The Bulldogs got three more with 10:53 to play in the third, when Jeremy Licea booted a 32-yard field goal that was set up by a 47-yard pass from Atkins to James Harris.

The Gamecocks needed just four plays to drive 67-yards on their ensuing possession. Perrilloux tossed a 51-yard touchdown to La'Ray Williams to cap the drive and give JSU a 31-6 lead with 6:14 left in the third quarter.

The Bulldogs finally found the end zone with 32 ticks remaining in the third, when Atkins scampered in from two yards out. The score capped a nine-play, 63-yard drive.

On the first play of the ensuing possession, Perrilloux found Wilkerson for a 59-yard scoring pass, putting Jax State up 38-13 with 12 seconds remaining in the third quarter.

Bonner punctuated the scoring for the Gamecocks with 5:39 to play, when his punt return gave them the deciding 45-13 advantage.

The Gamecocks travel to Thibodaux, La., on Saturday for a showdown with Nicholls State. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. CT, and the game will be a homecoming of sorts for Perrilloux, who grew up within a half hour of the NSU campus.
