CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – The Jacksonville State men's basketball team never led in regulation on Thursday night at Southeast Missouri but used a dominant overtime performance to earn its first Ohio Valley Conference win of the season, 65-56 at the Show Me Center.
The Gamecocks (3-18, 1-9 OVC) used a 57 percent shooting percentage in overtime and sank 11-of-12 free throws in the extra period to get in the win column and put an end to several streaks. The win snapped a 14-game losing streak and a 17-game skid in opponents' home arenas, but more importantly, JSU started the second half of the conference schedule with a win. It split the season series with the Redhawks (5-16, 4-7 OVC), who have now lost five in a row.
Senior Nick Murphy was scoreless in a first half that saw his JSU team score just 13 points, but the forward from Bronx, N.Y., scored 19 in the final 25 minutes, including eight in overtime. The night moved him into sixth on JSU's career scoring list, with his career 1,378 points moving past Buddy Cornelius for sixth place and stopping just two away from Bill Brantley in fifth. He also picked up three steals in the win to pass Jay Heard as JSU's Division I leader in career steals.
He led a trio of Gamecocks in double figures, as senior Jeremy Bynum and junior Stephen Hall each added 13 for JSU in the win. Hall, a native of Birmingham, Ala., scored the team's first five points of the game before adding six in overtime. An Oxford, Ala., Bynum was 3-for-3 from behind the arc to account for most of his output.
The same trio was also instrumental in guiding the Gamecocks to a 46-34 advantage on the glass, with Murphy and Hall leading the way with eight apiece. Bynum and freshman Nick Cook each grabbed seven, while Cook blocked three shots.
Fellow freshman Brian Williams scored just three points, but his lone field goal came with eight seconds remaining in regulation and sent the game into overtime. The Lawrenceville, Ga., native also dished four assists. Freshman Brice Jenkins added five, all in overtime, off of the bench.
The Redhawks got 16 from Cameron Butler and 13 apiece from Lucas Nutt and Anthony Allison. They went to the line 28 times, once more than JSU, but connected on just 14 for a .500 clip. On the night, JSU was 17-for-27 (.630) from the stripe.
Not much happened in the first half, as the two teams each turned it over 11 times while combining for just 10 field goals. The Gamecocks struggled to the tune of a 5-for-23 first half from the floor, while SEMO put an 8-for-15 half at the charity stripe with a 5-for-18 effort from the field to take a 19-13 lead into the locker room at the half. The 32 combined points were the fewest in a half in a JSU game since the Gamecocks and Samford scored 29 in the first half on Dec. 6, 2007.
The Gamecocks battled back slowly to start the second half, pulling to within a bucket eight times before finally tying the game at 36-36 on a Bynum trey with 5:30 to play. Allison answered for the Redhawks, scoring five in a row to put SEMO back on top 41-36, with just under four minutes to play.
Murphy cut the deficit to three on a pair of free throws and his steal set up another Bynum 3-pointer with 1:36 to play that tied it up again.
Lucas Nutt put the Redhawks back up with a floater with 1:01 to play, setting up Williams' game-tying basket. The freshman brought the ball down the floor following a Nutt missed free throw and took advantage of an opening in the lane and layed in a left-handed layup to tie the game with eight seconds.
Murphy forced a Nutt turnover with 2.9 seconds to play, and freshman Brice Jenkins' open look at the buzzer fell short from the left wing and sent the game into overtime.
JSU took control of the game in the extra period, building a five-point lead just 90 seconds in. They went to the line and protected it, going 11-for-12 after making just 6-of-15 in regulation.
The Gamecocks wrap up their four-game road swing on Saturday, when they take on Eastern Illinois at 6 p.m. in Charleston, Ill. They will then return home for a stretch of three-straight at Pate Mathews Coliseum, beginning on Feb. 3 vs. Morehead State at 7:45 p.m.
