FINAL STATS
CHARLESTON, Ill. – Fresh off its first road win of the season on Thursday, the Jacksonville State men's basketball team used defense to win its second in a row on Saturday with a 56-46 triumph at Eastern Illinois at Lantz Arena.
After the Panthers (8-13, 4-7 Ohio Valley Conference) pulled to within one point with 7:52 remaining, the Gamecocks (4-18, 2-9 OVC) forced turnovers on EIU's next four possessions to set up a 10-0 run that put the game out of reach. They also connected on 12 of their first 14 free throws in the second half and 17-of-24 on the night to sweep an OVC road trip for the first time since doing so on the same leg at the end of the 2004-05 season.
Senior Jeremy Bynum went 4-for-9 from behind the arc and 4-for-4 from the free throw line to lead all scorers with 18 points, while fellow senior Nick Murphy added 18 in the win. Bynum, a native of Oxford, Ala., scored 12 of his points in the second half but also grabbed five rebounds and blocked a shot during JSU's winning spurt. Junior Stephen Hall was the Gamecocks' only other player in double figures with 13 points on 4-of-9 shooting.
Murphy, a native of Bronx, N.Y., was 5-for-11 from the floor and 7-for-10 from the charity stripe to account for his scoring total, while pulling down a team-high seven boards and dishing a team-best five assists. Murphy also continued to make waves on JSU's career scoring list, passing Bill Brantley in fifth place on the list with 1,395.
JSU forced EIU into 16 turnovers and only gave it up eight times itself, a stat that led to a 16-2 Gamecock advantage in points off turnovers. Freshmen Brice Jenkins and Nick Cook each had three of the Gamecocks' nine steals. The defensive effort held EIU under 50 points, the first time JSU has done so to an opponent since early in the 2008 season against Berry College, 70 games ago.
The Panthers got 14 points each from Shaun Pratl and Jeremy Granger, a duo that combined for 20 of the team's 27 points in the second half, including a stretch of 16 in a row at one point.
Neither team led by more than five points in the first half, one that saw four ties and three lead changes. That final change came with just two seconds remaining before the intermission, when Bynum knocked down a trey from the right wing to give JSU a 21-19 advantage at the half.
Bynum's six points joined Hall's six as the team leaders at the half, while L.C. Doss put in six for the Panthers. Murphy grabbed five boards and pitched in four points for JSU.
The two exchanged blows for the majority of the second half before the Gamecock defense turned it up a notch and set up the deciding run.
The Gamecocks return home for the first time since Jan. 15 on Thursday, when they host Morehead State at 7:45 p.m. The game will follow the JSU women's game vs. MSU at 5:15 p.m. It will be Bike Night for JSU students, when Scott's Bikes will give away a bike to a lucky student during the doubleheader.
