JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State men's basketball team will begin a stretch of three home games in five days on Thursday, when the Gamecocks host Morehead State at 7:45 p.m. at Pete Mathews Coliseum.
Thursday's game will also be Bike Night, when Scott's Bikes and JSU will give a free mountain bike away to one lucky JSU student. The matchup with the Eagles will set up a weekend that will also see Eastern Kentucky pay a visit on Saturday at 4:30 p.m., a game that will feature free pizza for JSU students and a ceremony honoring the Gamecocks' 1985 National Championship Team at halftime. JSU will then round out the weekend on Monday with a 7 p.m. showdown with Tennessee State. General Admission to Monday's game is only $1, and Scott's Bikes will be giving away another bicycle to a JSU student.
After a four-game road trip that saw the Gamecocks win back-to-back road Ohio Valley Conference games for the first time since 2006, they return home for the first time since Jan. 15 trying to build upon the momentum gained in last week's wins at Southeast Missouri and Eastern Illinois.
They welcome one of the top teams in the league on Thursday in Morehead State, who has won three in a row and nine of its last 11. The Eagles feature the top player in the OVC and one of the best in the country in forward Kenneth Faried. The 6-foot-7 senior leads the nation with 14.3 rebounds per game and is fifth-most career rebounds of any player in the nation since 1973, when freshmen were allowed to play.
The Gamecocks also boast one of the most productive players in the OVC in senior Nick Murphy. The Bronx, N.Y., native is third in the league in scoring with 15.7 points per game and is seventh in rebounding with 6.1 per outing. He is also making career waves, but his are at JSU. In Saturday's win at EIU, he scored 17 points to run his career total to 1,395, passing JSU great and All-American Bill Brantley for fifth on the school's career scoring list.
Also in the win over the Panthers, senior Jeremy Bynum scored a game-high 18, thanks to a 4-for-9 night from behind the 3-point line. The Oxford, Ala., native is 20th on the school's scoring list and is third all-time in JSU's Division I history, trailing only Murphy and Walker Russell.
The Gamecocks will be looking to avenge a 73-52 loss at MSU on Jan. 8 and pull closer in a series that has seen the Eagles win the last four meetings.
