BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – Junior Abbey Stepp made a big splash in her first weekend with the Jacksonville State softball team by earning Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week honors to open the season.
The league's sports information directors voted the 5-foot-9 infielder from Versailles, Ky., the OVC's top offensive performer for the week after her performance in the Hibbett/Easton All-Alabama Classic over the weekend. The nation's second-best hitter last year at Volunteer State Community College in Gallatin, Tenn., Stepp picked up where she left off as she began her Division I career.
She hit .417 with two home runs, six runs scored and five RBI over the Gamecocks' five games, a stretch that also saw her boast a .438 on-base percentage and a 1.000 slugging percentage. Her career got off to a fast start as she belted a two-run home run in her first Division I at bat against UAB on Friday, a game in which she went 3-for-3 with a double, a homer, three runs scored and two RBI.
She reached base at least once in all five games over the weekend and drove in at least one run in four of the five to earn all-tournament honors for the weekend. She also drew a pair of walks and had two sacrifice flies, while putting together a perfect week in 26 chances in the field.
Stepp and the Gamecocks will be back in action this weekend, when they travel to Jacksonville, Fla., to compete in the Jacksonville University Invitational. JSU opens play on Friday at 12:30 p.m. CT against Central Michigan before taking on the host Dolphins at 5 p.m. CT.
