
JSU's Ben Waldrip Named OVC Player of Week

BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – Jacksonville State's Ben Waldrip has been named the Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week, the league office announced on Monday.
Making his Jacksonville State debut, Waldrip batted .440 after going 11-for-25 with nine RBI, including two home runs and three doubles as the first baseman finished with five extra base hits to help the Gamecocks post a 3-2 record.
The junior went 8-for-15 in helping the Gamecocks earn a 3-0 sweep over Middle Tennessee over the weekend. He was 2-for-3 on Friday, then saved his best for Saturday's 14-inning game, where he went 5-for-7 with a pair of home runs, scored three runs and drove in three runs to lead JSU to a 9-6 win.
On Sunday, he finished 2-for-5, hitting two doubles and scoring two runs as Jax State rallied for six runs in the top of the ninth inning to tie the game at 9-9, before scoring three runs in the 10th to earn the sweep over the Blue Raiders.
For the week, the junior batted .583 (7-for-12) with runners on base, including a .625 batting average with runners in scoring position.
Jacksonville State returns to action on Tuesday at UAB. The Gamecocks are expected to throw junior right-hander Aaron Elias (1-0, 6.23 ERA), while UAB will throw left-hander David Hayes (0-0, 4.50 ERA). Game time is set for 3 p.m. at Young Memorial Field.
