JACKSONVILLE – After almost a week away from competition, both Jacksonville State tennis teams posted wins in Ohio Valley Conference play as the JSU men blanked Eastern Illinois, 7-0, while the Gamecock women edged the Panthers, 4-3, on Wednesday at the JSU Tennis Courts.
The win by the women's squad pushed their OVC record to 2-0 and 5-8 overall, while the men improved to 2-1 in conference play and evened the season's overall mark at 7-7.
In the men's match, Jax State started quickly by winning the doubles point. The top pairing of
Gustavo Holz and
Brian Kenyon topped EIU's duo of Charlie Dryden and Michael Sperry, 8-5. At No. 2, JSU's
Nenad Marcec and
Axel Sundberg rolled past EIU's team of Jamie Firth and Matyas Hilgert, 8-4. The Gamecock tandem of
Igor Santos and
Felipe Watanabe made quick work of the Panther pairing of Kevin Bauman and Warren Race, 8-2.
The Gamecocks carried the momentum from doubles into singles play as five of the six matches were completed in straight sets in favor of the Red and White. Sundberg finished off the sweep with a three-set match over Higert on court No. 2/ Sundberg dropped the opening set, 7-5, but rebounded to extend the match to a super tie-breaker with a second set 7-5 win. He clinched the match with a 10-4 win in the tie-breaker. Kenyon bounced Sperry of EIU at the top spot, 6-2, 6-0, while Marcec turned in a 6-1, 6-1 win over Race. Watanabe moved to 3-0 in conference play with a 7-6, 6-3 victory over Dryden at No. 6.
In a much closer affair, the women's match came down to No. 2 singles as Jax State's
Martina Dessbesell sealed the win for the Gamecocks as she downed EIU's Merritt Whitley, 7-5, 6-4. JSU recovered in singles play after dropping the doubles point to EIU. Including Dessbesell's win at No. 2, JSU carded wins at No. 1, 3 and 5 for the win. Marani Vivane posted a 6-4, 6-3 win over Janelle Prisner at No. 1, while
Juliana Renesto and
Raisa Guasti tallied wins at No. 3 and 5 respectively.
JSU continues its homestand on Friday, March 25 as it welcomes the Tigers of Tennessee State to campus for a 1:30 p.m. match. The JSU women will also host Southeast Missouri on Saturday, March 26. Match time is set for 10 a.m.
