
Waldrip Blasts Two Homers to Lead Gamecocks to Split over UT Martin

JACKSONVILLE – Ben Waldrip hit a pair of home runs, while Jake Sharrock and Scott Underwood each added another home run to lead Jacksonville State to a 7-4 win over UT Martin in the second game of Saturday's Ohio Valley Conference double-header.
Jordan Owen and Matt Young each had three hits, while Dan Tobik had seven strikeouts to lead UT Martin to a 9-3 win over Jacksonville State in the opener.
Hunter Rivers (5-0) picked up the win after scattering four hits over 2 1/3 innings in relief. Todd Hornsby threw just one pitch to get a double play ground ball to earn his seventh save of the year. Danny Kelley (0-3) gave up four runs in five innings on the mound to suffer the loss for the Skyhawks.
UTM (5-17, 1-1) jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on a Cody Terry RBI triple and Wes Patterson followed with a RBI single for the Skyhawks.
Waldrip led off the second inning with a solo home run over the right center field fence for the Gamecocks to cut the lead to 2-1.
Jax State (16-7, 1-1) tied the game in the third inning after Sharrock hit a RBI single up the middle to score Kyle Bluestein and tie the game at 2-2. UTM took a 3-2 lead on a Wes Patterson scored on a Gamecock throwing error, but Jax State tied the game in the home half of the fourth after Waldrip led off with a solo home run down the right field line.
The game was then stopped for 94 minutes due to weather, but after resuming in the fifth inning, the Gamecocks took the lead for good on a solo home run by Sharrock, his first of the season.
Scott Underwood then hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth inning for the final margin. Underwood, Sharrock and Waldrip each had two hits to lead the Gamecocks, while Patterson led the Skyhawks with three hits.
In the second game, Tobik (1-3) scattered eight hits and issued a pair of walks to earn his first win of the season. Alec Mills had three strikeouts in two innings to earn his first save of the year for the Skyhawks. Aaron Elias (3-1) gave up just two earned runs to get stuck with the loss for the Gamecocks.
UTM took a 2-0 lead in the third inning on a RBI triple by Matt Young and he came in to score on a Trey Karlen sacrifice fly to give the Skyhawks the early lead.
Jax State tied the game in the fourth on a two-RBI triple by Blake Seguin, but UTM took the lead in the fifth inning on a RBI single by Jordan Owen and a sacrifice fly by Cody Terry as the Skyhawks built a 4-2 lead.
The Gamecocks scored their final run on a RBI single by Sam Eberle in the bottom of the fifth, but UTM added a run in the sixth, seventh and eighth inning, before scoring two more in the ninth for the final margin.
