BIRMINGHAM – Saxon Butler and Brandon Miller each hit home runs to lead Samford to a 7-4 win over Jacksonville State at Joe Lee Griffin Field on Tuesday to snap a five-game losing streak to the Gamecocks.
Tyler Vanderheiden (1-0) had a pair of strikeouts in 1 1/3 innings of relief to earn the win for Samford, while Andrew Jones recorded the final three outs to earn his fifth save of the year. Hunter Rivers (5-1) gave up four runs in 1 1/3 innings to suffer his first loss of the season for Jax State.
Samford took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a solo home run by Butler, but the Gamecocks tied the game in the second on a sacrifice fly by Andrew Bishop.
The Bulldogs answered in the home half of the second to score a pair of runs on a two-RBI double by Michael Johnson to take a 3-1 lead. Johnson led Samford with three hits in the game.
Jax State took its first lead of the game in the fourth inning after Erik Underwood and Blake Seguin led off with back-to-back singles. Kyle Bluestein followed with a single up the middle to score Underwood and cut the lead to 3-2.
Jake Sharrock then drove in a pair of runs with a two-out single up the middle to give the Gamecocks a 4-3 lead.
Samford then took the lead for good in the sixth inning after scoring four runs, highlighted by a solo home run by Miller.
Sam Eberle, Underwood, Seguin and Bluestein each had two hits to lead the Gamecocks, while Sharrock led the team with a pair of RBI.
Jacksonville State returns to action this weekend with a three-game Ohio Valley Conference series at Tennessee Tech. Saturday's double-header is scheduled for 1 p.m., with Sunday's single-game is also scheduled for 1 p.m.
