BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – Jacksonville State's Todd Hornsby has been named the adidas® Ohio Valley Conference Baseball Pitcher of the Week, the league office announced on Monday.
Hornsby posted a career week by earning three saves in all three opportunities last week after helping the Gamecocks improve to 7-3 on the season.
The former Clay-Chalkville High School product picked up his first save of the season against Harvard on Friday, then earned two saves on Sunday after striking out all three batters in the top of the ninth inning JSU's 5-4 win in the first game.
Horbsby then pitched 1 2/3 innings in the second game, throwing only 12 pitches and recording a strikeout, to earn a save in a 5-4 Gamecock win.
Jacksonville State returns to action on Tuesday by hosting in-state rival Samford. The Gamecocks are expected to start freshman left-hander Casey Antley, who has made four appearances this season with a 1-0 record and has not allowed a run with six strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings on the mound.
The Gamecock offense is led by true freshman Coty Blanchard, who is batting .485 with three doubles, a triple and a home run in eight starts on the diamond. The Leesburg, Ala., native has a .727 slugging percentage and a .526 on-base percentage to lead the team in both categories.
Junior Ben Waldrip is second on the team with a .423 batting average with nine RBI, while junior Erik Underwood is hitting .412. Sam Eberle leads the team with 13 RBI and is hitting .364 at the plate with a pair of doubles, a triple and two home runs.
Samford enters the game with an 8-5 record on the season and is led by Michael Johnson's .468 batting average, while Phillip Ervin is second on the team with a .467 average. The Bulldogs are expected to start right-hander Charles Basford, who has a 2-0 record with an 0.84 earned run average.
Game time is set for 6:30 p.m. at Rudy Abbott Field. The game will be carried on the Jacksonville State Radio Network and live stats will be available at JSUGamecockSports.com.
