JACKSONVILLE – Ben Waldrip went 2-for-3 and hit a two-run home run to lead Jacksonville State to a 5-2 win over Samford in a rain-shortened game on Tuesday night at Rudy Abbott Field.
Tanner Freshour (1-0) threw only three pitches, but recorded the final out of the fifth inning to earn his first win of the season. Casey Antley went 4 2/3 inning, recording five strikeouts and scattering six hits in his first career start for the Gamecocks. Samford's Rumiko Forrester (0-1) gave up three runs on just one hit to suffer the loss for the Bulldogs.

Jax State took the lead after Erik Underwood was hit by a pitch to lead off the fourth inning, moved to second on a balk and to third on a wild pitch. Sam Eberle followed with an infield grounder to score Underwood and give the Gamecocks a 1-0 lead.
Waldrip then hit the first pitch he saw over the scoreboard in right field for his third home run of the season to give Jacksonville State a 3-0 lead.
Samford plated a pair of runs in the top of the fifth inning, thanks to a two-RBI triple by Michael Johnson, but the Gamecocks answered in the home half of the inning.
Coty Blanchard and Michael Bishop each drew one-out walks, before Underwood followed with a double to left field to score Blanchard and Bishop for the final margin.
Samford was led by Johnson and Gardner Richey each had a pair of hits, while Johnson drove in both runs for the Bulldogs.
Jacksonville State returns to the field for a three-game series against Southern Illinois this weekend. Friday's single-game will begin at 6:30 p.m., while Saturday and Sunday will start at 1 p.m. at Rudy Abbott Field.
