PADUCAH, Ky. – Jacksonville State captured its first Ohio Valley Conference Women's Tennis Championship on Sunday by downing UT Martin, 4-0, at the Heflin Tennis Center.
The OVC crown is the first for the Jax State women's tennis program since joining the league in 2004. The Gamecocks received the OVC's automatic bid to the NCAA Women's Tennis Championship, which begins on either May 13 or 14 at a site yet to be determined. The NCAA will announce the regional pairings on Tuesday, May 3.
The Red and White will carry a seven-match winning streak into NCAA play. JSU pushed its season's mark to 13-10 overall and carded a 7-1 OVC mark to share the regular season title with UTM.
“I am very proud of the girls today,” said head coach Steve Bailey. “It was a huge match for us and it was great atmosphere with UT Martin having some fans make the drive up here. We will take some time off to concentrate on final exams before getting back out on the court to hit some balls and see where we end up in the NCAA Tournament.”
The Gamecocks jumped on the scoreboard with the doubles point as they took matches at No. 1 and 2 respectively. JSU's top duo of Martina Dessbesell and Viviane Marani turned back UTM's pairing of Anna Marie Herbold and Jodie Tiley, 8-5. After the Skyhawks took court No. 3, Jax State's tandem of Raisa Guasti and Raphaela Lima ousted UTM's team of Alice Laing and Anna Winkelmann, 8-2. The win by the Guasti and Lima duet was their ninth straight and 15th of the season.
Guasti, an OVC Second Team selection, continued JSU's dominance in singles as she bounced Laing, 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3 before Lima tacked on the third Jax State point at No. 4. Lima won in straight sets over UTM's Ivon Simic, 6-2, 6-2. Guasti and Lima have now claimed their last six singles matches. The championship was clinched by senior Martina Dessbesell's victory over Winkelmann, 6-4, 6-1. Dessbesell moved her individual record to 13-5 overall at the No. 2 spot in the line up.
JSU swept both matches it played in the 2011 edition of the OVC Women's Tennis Championship as it also blanked Austin Peay in Saturday's semifinals.
