Hunter Rivers Allows Just One Hit as Gamecocks Sweep Cougars

JACKSONIVILLE – Jacksonville State's Hunter Rivers was just two outs away from throwing a no-hitter to lead the Gamecocks to a 4-0 shutout over Southern Illinois Edwardsville as JSU swept the Cougars on Saturday. JSU claimed a 3-1 win in the opener.
Rivers, which leads the Ohio Valley Conference with eight wins, threw just 65 pitches and allowed his only hit with one out in the top of the seventh inning to SIUE's Devin Caldwell to left field. He improved to 8-1 on the season, while SIUE's Josh Malin (4-3) gave up eight hits and all four runs to get stuck with the loss.
The Gamecocks (27-14) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning after Coty Blanchard scored on a RBI double by Jake Sharrock, who finished the game with a pair of hits to lead JSU.
Jax State added two more runs in the fourth inning after Blake Seguin scored on a SIUE throwing error and Michael Bishop followed with a RBI single through the left side as the Gamecocks took a 3-0 lead.
Scott Underwood then led off the sixth inning with a solo homerun to give the Gamecocks a 4-0 lead and their third straight win.
In the opener, Aaron Elias (6-2) scattered four hits over 6 1/3 innings and had eight strikeouts to lead the Gamecocks to a 3-1 win. Junior Todd Hornsby extended his school record by recording the final six outs to earn his 12th save of the season, which also ties the Ohio Valley Conference single-season record. Travis Felax got stuck with the loss for the Cougars after allowing just four hits and two earned runs.
Jax State scored all three runs in the fourth inning after Michael Bishop had a RBI single through the left side, and Blake Seguin came around to score on a Cougar throwing error to give JSU a 2-0 lead.
Stephen Bartlett followed with a RBI single to right center to score Bishop and give the Gamecocks a 3-0 lead.
The Cougars scored their only run in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly by Travis Becherer and could get no closer.
Hornsby came in and pitched the final two innings to earn the save to secure the Gamecock win.
Sam Eberle, Seguin, Bishop and Bartlett each had a hit for the Gamecocks in the opener.
Jax State will be going for the series sweep on Sunday as the two teams play the final game of the series at 1 p.m. at Rudy Abbott Field.
