CHARLESTON, Ill. – Zach Borenstein had three hits and scored the winning run in the bottom of the 15th inning on an error as Eastern Illinois rallied for a 4-3 win over Jacksonville State in the opening game of a three-game Ohio Valley Conference series on Saturday.
The Panthers improved to 14-25 on the season and 8-8 in the OVC, while the Gamecocks dropped to 27-17 and 8-7 in the conference. Saturday's second game was moved to Sunday since EIU does not have lights and there was not enough daylight left to play the game.
Brent McNeil (3-1) picked up the win after pitching the final 4 1/3 innings and allowing just two hits for EIU. JSU's Todd Hornsby (3-4) did not allow an earned run, but got stuck with the loss after the Gamecocks had three errors over the final 7 1/3 innings.
Jax State took an early 1-0 lead after Sam Eberle hit a solo home run in the top of the first inning, his eighth home run of the year and the second straight game the junior has slugged a round tripper.
The Gamecocks added a run in the fourth inning after Erik Underwood led off with a walk and moved to second on a single by Blake Seguin before Scott Underwood had a sacrifice bunt to move both runners up. Andrew Bishop then had a RBI infield grounder to score Underwood and give JSU a 2-0 lead.
Jacksonville State extended the lead in the seventh inning after Coty Blanchard came around to score on Ben Waldrip's RBI single as the Gamecocks built a 3-0 lead.
The Panthers finally got on the board in the eighth inning after Brad Schwegert and Nick Priessman led off with back-to-back singles off of JSU starter Aaron Elias and both moved up on a wild pitch. Borenstein then had a RBI single down the left field line to score Schwegert, before Priessman later scored on a sacrifice fly to cut the lead to 3-2.
Eastern Illinois tied the game in the home half of the ninth inning after Kucharski reached on a Gamecock throwing error and came around to score on Dineen's infield grounder as the Panthers forced extra innings.
EIU scored the winning run in the bottom of the 15th inning after Borenstein led off with a single up the middle and came around to score after Schweigert reached on a Gamecock throwing error, which would have been the third out of the inning.
Eberle and Waldrip each had three hits and a RBI to lead the Gamecocks, while Blanchard and Jake Sharrock each had two hits.
The two teams will now play a pair of seven-inning games on Sunday and the first game is set to start at 12 noon.
