Gamecocks Split with Eastern Illinois on Sunday

CHARLESTON, Ill. – Jake Sharrock had three hits and Scott Underwood added two more as Jacksonville State claimed a 5-4 win over Eastern Illinois as the two teams split a double header on Sunday after the Panthers won the first game 7-4.
Jax State improves to 28-18 on the season and 9-8 in the Ohio Valley Conference, while EIU drops to 17-25, 9-9 in the conference.
Freshman Casey Antley (2-1) pitched 2 1/3 innings of relief and allowed just three hits to earn the win for the Gamecocks, while Matt Miller (0-4) got stuck with the loss after giving up the winning runs in the sixth inning.
Sharrock scored on a RBI single by Ben Waldrip in the first inning as the Gamecocks took a 1-0 lead, but the Panthers answered after Cam Strang scored an unearned run in the bottom of the first to tie the game at 1-1.
The Gamecocks took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth inning after Andrew Bishop scored on an infield grounder by Michael Bishop, but Brad Schweigert had a RBI single in the home half of the fourth to tie the game at 2-2.
Eastern Illinois took a 3-2 lead in the fifth inning on a RBI single by Shawn Ferguson, but the Gamecocks took the lead for good in the sixth inning.
Erik Underwood and Jay Davis each reached on one-out walk, before Coty Blanchard followed with an infield grounder to score Underwood and tie the game at 3-3. Sharrock followed with a RBI single to give JSU a 4-3 lead, before Blanchard scored on a sacrifice fly by Sam Eberle for a 5-3 lead.
The Panthers added a run in the bottom of the seventh inning after Ferguson scored on a sacrifice fly for the final margin. Schweigert and Ben Thoma led the Panthers with two hits each.
In the opener, Nick Priessman and Strang each had two hits as the Panthers held on for a 7-4 win after jumping out to an early 3-0 lead.
Strang, Thomass and Ferguson each drove in a run in the first inning to give EIU an early 3-0 lead, but the Gamecocks scored their first run after Andrew Bishop led off the third inning with a solo home run.
The Panthers took a 4-1 lead after Schweigert had a RBI single in the fourth inning, but Jay Davis had a RBI single in the fifth inning to cut the lead to 4-2.
Borenstein and McManus each drove in a run in the fifth inning to give Eastern a 6-2 lead, before Matt McLaughlin slugged a two-run home run for the Gamecocks to cut the lead to 6-4.
The Panthers added an insurance run on a sacrifice bunt in the sixth inning for the final margin.
Luke Bushur (4-3) picked up the win after recording five strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings, while Hunter Rivers (8-2) got stuck with the loss for the Gamecocks.
Andrew Bishop led the Gamecocks with two hits, while McLaughlin led the team with a pair of RBI.
Jacksonville State returns to action on Tuesday against UAB. Game time is set for 6:30 p.m. at Rudy Abbott Field and will be carried on the JSU Radio Network.
