JACKSONVILLE – A valiant effort fell short as Jacksonville State fell to New Mexico State, 2-1, on the opening day of the Adidas Gamecock Soccer Classic at the JSU Soccer Field on Friday night.
The match was also Jax State's home debut after starting the 2011 campaign with four straight road matches. JSU falls to 0-5-0 on the season, while the Aggies of NMSU improved to 3-2-0.
After a 45 minute stalemate, Aggies put the first goal on the board in the beginning moments of the second half. NMSU's Katie Smith maneuvered around the JSU line of defense for the game's initial goal. The Red and White responded with the equalizing goal just second later as junior Dani Miller caught NMSU off-guard from its goal. The Carmel, Ind.-native took a cross from Nathalee Lariviere and capitalized with a straight away shot. Miller's goal was JSU's first of the season, which instilled some confidence in Gamecocks as they finished ten total shots, six on goal opportunities.
“It was really big answering New Mexico State after they scored,” head coach Julie Davis Carlson said. “It was the best passes we had all night on that possession. It was a great second half. I think both teams started taking some risks after the first 45 minutes.”
The Aggies had ample scoring chances in both halves as they posted 18 attempts – nine in each period. Jax State junior keeper Katelyn Geddings returned to the goal after suffering an injury last Sunday at South Alabama. The Warrior, Ala.-product matched her career high with eight stops. She had eight saves against Middle Tennessee State earlier in the season.
NMSU posted the game-winning goal as Yolanda McMillion finished up a served ball from Jennae Cambra in the 54th minute.
“NMSU is very fast and athletic and I thought our girls showed a lot of guts against them,” Carlson mentioned. “They executed in the second half. We have a young defense and we are rotating a lot on offense.”
Freshmen Jackie Rush, Courtney Hurt and senior captain Chelsea Pelletier paced the Gamecock offensive attack with a pair of shot attempts.
The two-day event wraps up on Sunday, Sept. 4 with a Noon contest with NMSU and Tennessee Tech. JSU will meet Louisiana Tech at 2:30 p.m. LA Tech and TTU played to a double-overtime scoreless draw.
