JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State men's basketball team will conclude its homestand on Monday with a 5:15 p.m. non-conference game vs. South Carolina Upstate at Pete Mathews Coliseum.
A three-game winning streak will fall on Monday, when the Gamecocks and Spartans tie up in a non-conference game that caps a home-and-home series this season. Both teams have not only won three in a row but have each pulled out four wins in the last six games.
JSU is looking to avenge a 50-48 loss to the Spartans in Spartanburg, S.C., on Dec. 1 that saw Upstate overcome a 15-point
deficit before rallying to win. It marks the second time the Spartans have paid a visit to Pete Mathews Coliseum but the first since 1992, when then-South Carolina-Spartanburg dropped a 105-87 decision to the Gamecocks in the final of the Division II South Regional.
The Gamecocks are riding high on their first three-game winning streak since early in the 2009-10 season. The last time out, five players scored in double figures, combining for 70 points in a 76-65 win over SIU-Edwardsville on Saturday. Junior Ronnie Boggs filled the stat sheet for the Gamecocks with 11 points, nine boards, four assists and six steals. Freshman Darion Rackley set career highs in points (16) rebounds (6) and assists (4) in the win.
Sophomore Brian Williams led the way with 18 points, while sophomore Nick Cook scored 15 and dished a career-high six assists.
The Spartans grabbed a 58-54 win over East Tennessee State on Friday, capping a perfect three-game homestand.
Torrey Craig, whose game winner sank JSU in the final seconds in December, leads Upstate with 17.5 points and 8.0 rebounds per game.
