JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State men's basketball team will play a pair of games at Pete Mathews Coliseum this weekend, beginning with a 7 p.m. matchup with Morehead State on Thursday and wrapping up with a 4:30 p.m. showdown with Tennessee State on Saturday.
After a grueling eight-day road trip that saw the Gamecocks play four games in six days to close it, JSU finally returns to the friendly confines of Pete Mathews Coliseum for a pair of Ohio Valley Conference games, beginning with a Thursday date with defending champion Morehead State.
JSU traveled through seven states on its longest trip of the season before returning home at 5:30 a.m. Tuesday and welcome a short homestand before taking to the road again for three more games. The battle with Morehead State will be just the third home game for the Gamecocks in their last 13 contests.
The Gamecocks have dropped their first three Ohio Valley Conference games of the young conference schedule but all three losses have come at the hands of three of the four remaining unbeaten teams in league play. The latter came at Southeast Missouri on Monday in a game that saw a restocked Redhawks team put forth one of their best shooting nights of the season.
Junior Tarvin Gaines, who scored in double figures in three of the Gamecocks four games on the trip and earned All-Tournament honors at the Sun Bowl Invitational, leads JSU in scoring with 12.0 points per night, while senior Stephen Hall's 5.6 rebounds per game are tops in the team.
Thursday marks the 21st meeting between JSU and Morehead State, with the Eagles holding a 14-6 advantage in the series. MSU is in their first season without two-time OVC Player of the Year and NBA Draft pick Kenneth Faried. The Eagles are led so far this season by Terrence Hill, whose 13.3 points per game make him the lone MSU player averaging double figures. They do have three other players averaging eight or more points per outing.
