JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State men's basketball team will host Martin Methodist Tuesday on Kids' Night at Pete Mathews Coliseum. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. CT and admission is free to all fans age 18 and under. JSU will give away Bikes, Kid's Cars, signed JSU memorabilia and much more! The Gamecocks will be available to sign autographs following the game.
The Gamecocks return to Pete Mathews Coliseum hoping to continue what has been a good start to the 2012-13 season. Riding its second three-game winning streak of the season, JSU is off to a 6-2 start that ties the 2002-03 and 2008-09 teams for the best start in the program's 18-year Div. I history. No Jax State team has ever started the season with a 7-2 record in Division I.
Defense has been the key to the Gamecocks' recent success. They are limiting their opponents to an Ohio Valley Conference-best 59.0 points per game, which ranks 53rd nationally. They are holding their opponents to a .250 3-point field goal percentage, also the best in the OVC and the 17th best in the nation. In fact, the 150 total points allowed by JSU over the past three games are the fewest over a three-game span since the 1980-81 team held its foes to 144 during one stretch.
Jax State faces NAIA Martin Methodist for the first time on the hardwood, but there are a few ties between the two teams. MMC first-year head coach Scott Combs is familiar with the Gamecocks, having coached against JSU several times at his previous job as an assistant at OVC foe Austin Peay. Redhawks senior guard Justin Blake transferred to MMC from Peay, where he faced the Gamecocks six times, including a 14-point performance in 2009-10 as a freshman.
The Gamecocks are getting 11.6 points per game from senior Tarvin Gaines, while sophomore Darion Rackley is pitching in 11.1 per contest. Senior Ronnie Boggs is also averaging in double figures with 10.6 ppg.
