JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State men's basketball team will host Tennessee Tech in its Ohio Valley Conference opener on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. at Pete Mathews Coliseum. Admission is free to children ages 18 and under.
The Gamecocks return to action after their Christmas break and do so with a quick trip home to Pete Mathews Coliseum, where they host Tennessee Tech in the Ohio Valley Conference opener for both teams. The Gamecocks are looking to bounce back after a heartbreaking loss at Nebraska before the break snapped their five-game winning streak.
In that 59-55 loss to the Huskers, the Gamecocks battled back from down 15 with seven minutes to play and pulled to within a point with 22 seconds on the clock. After Nebraska made just one of its two free throw attempts, JSU had an attempt to tie in the final seconds but it was too strong and allowed the Huskers to escape with the win.
Jax State had four players score in double figures in the loss, a group that was led by sophomore Darion Rackley's 17 points, 12 of which came in the second half. Senior Tarvin Gaines added 13 points in the loss, while Ronnie Boggs scored 11 to go along with his six rebounds. Junior Brian Williams rounded out the foursome in double digits with 10 points.
The Gamecocks continued their impressive defense of the 3-point shot, holding the Huskers to an 0-for-5 night from beyond the arc. The performance improved JSU's opponent's 3-point percentage to a league-best .243 that is also the fourth-best mark in the nation.
Rackley currently leads JSU in scoring with 13.7 points per game, while Gaines' 12.3 points per night is second. Boggs (11.0) and Williams (10.5) are also averaging in double figures.
