
Jax State Tennis Splits With Mercer

MACON, Ga. – Jacksonville State tennis gained a split on Tuesday on the road at Mercer as the JSU women toppled the Bears, 6-1, while the men dropped a 5-2 decision at MU's LeRoy Peddy Tennis Center.
The Jax State women improved to 3-3 on the season with the victory, while the Gamecock men dropped to 2-6 overall.
In the women's match, JSU swept all three doubles matches to gain the early 1-0 edge. The Gamecocks' top duo of Raisa Guasti and Raphaela Lima made quick work of Mercer's tandem of Jennifer Lada and Lucie Payrat, 8-4. Danielle Kerindi and Rafaela Wenzel ousted Melanie Schumilas and Amanda Bertani, 8-3. At No. 3, the sweep was completed as JSU's pairing of Kelly Tomlin and Aleksandra Cmilijic turned back Katherine Cooper and Sarah Hanna, 8-2.
JSU carried the momentum into singles action as claimed five of the six singles points. The Red and White clinched the match after Wenzel downed Schumilas at No.3, 6-4, 6-0. Kerindi, Tomlin and Cmilijic turned in straight sets wins at their respective courts, while Guasti out-lasted Lada at No. 1 in three sets. Guasti won the first set 6-4 before falling 6-3 to force a third and deciding set. She would claim the match in a tie-breaker, 7-6 (1).
In the men's match, Mercer squeaked out wins at all three courts for the point. Igor Santos and Nenad Marcec registered JSU's points at No. 2 and 3. Santos topped Peter Tauchner, 6-2, 6-3. Santos improved to 5-2 overall in singles and 5-0 when playing in the two-spot. Marcec tallied a 6-4, 6-0 win over David Barton for his fifth win of the season.
The JSU women return to action on Friday against Texas-San Antonio in Birmingham, Ala. Match time is set for 1 p.m. The Gamecock will face Chattanooga on Feb. 29 on the road.
