JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State men's basketball team will host Tennessee Tech in a key Ohio Valley Conference matchup at 4:30 p.m. Saturday as part of Free Faculty and Staff Day at Pete Mathews Coliseum. All JSU Faculty, Staff and their families get in free with their JSU ID.
The Gamecocks make a quick stop at Pete Mathews Coliseum to host a Tennessee Tech team that has been red hot since losing at the buzzer to JSU two weeks ago.
Jax State pulled off an improbable comeback in Cookeville on Jan. 19, a game that saw the Gamecocks trail by four with less than 10 seconds to play before winning on a Dion Waiters 3-point play with one second remaining. Since that loss to the Gamecocks, TTU has gone 4-1 and has scored more than 90 points in its last two outings. They bring in one of the nation's top scorers in Kevin Murphy, who scored 50 points vs. SIUE on Monday and 34 at Austin Peay on Thursday to raise his OVC-leading average to 21.8 points per game.
The Gamecocks have also been putting together wins, as well, having claimed four of their last five games and four in a row in league play. With its first four-game OVC winning streak, JSU has played itself into the race for the conference tournament. The Gamecocks are in sole possession of eighth place and are just one-half game out of sixth and one game out of fifth with five league games remaining.
JSU has had five players score in double figures in each of the last three games, including Thursday's game at UT Martin that saw junior Ronnie Boggs score a career-high 17 points. In that win over the Skyhawks, JSU was one free throw away from an OVC record. The Gamecocks went 23-for-24 from the charity stripe, one shy of Murray State's OVC record of 24-for-24, set in the 1965-66 season.
Sophomore Brian Williams scored in double figures for the fifth straight game and for the ninth time in his last 10 games on Thursday and leads JSU with 12.9 ppg.
