BIRMINGHAM - Jacksonville State dropped a 6-1 decision to UAB in men's tennis action on Saturday at the UAB Tennis Complex.
UAB entered the weekend ranked 61st in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's national rankings. The setback dropped JSU to 3-8 on the season, but after playing a tough non-conference slate, it will open Ohio Valley Conference play on Sunday. The Gamecocks will host Eastern Kentucky at 11 a.m. in Gadsden, Ala. at the Gadsden Tennis Complex.
The Blazers jumped on the scoreboard after sweeping all three doubles matches and clinched the win with three singles wins at the bottom of the line up.
The Gamecocks lone point came at No. 1 as junior
Axel Sundberg won a three set match over UAB's Danny Manlow. Sundberg won the opening set 6-2 before Manlow bounced back to send the match to a super tie-breaker since the match was already sealed for the Blazers. Sundberg out-lasted Manlow, 13-11 in the third and deciding set. Sundberg's win was his fourth in singles play and his second consecutive win at No. 1.
Igor Santos, the OVC Male Athelte of the Week, sufered his first loss of the season at No. 2 as he fell 6-3, 6-2 to UAB's David Zimmerman. Santos entered the match having claimed his last seven singles matches at No. 2.
Felipe Watanabe played his second match of the season at No. 3 in the line up and fell in straight sets to Chris Helliar of UAB.
Joshua Bourke was inserted into the JSU line up at No. 4 and suffered a 6-0, 6-1 loss to the Blazers' Daniel Moser. Freshmen

Felipe Diaz dropped matches at No. 5 and 6 respectively.
