Gamecock Men's Tennis Downs Troy

TROY - The Jacksonville state men's tennis team posted a 4-3 win over in-state rival Troy on Wednesday, while the JSU women suffered a 5-2 defeat in the women's contest at the Lunsford Tennis Complex.

The JSU men will take a 5-9 record into their first Ohio Valley Conference road trip this weekend to the state of Illinois.  Jax State will face Eastern Illinois on Saturday in Charleston, before making the trek over to Edwardsville to take on SIUE.  The Gamecock women's squad fell to 3-12 on the season and will be looking for their first OVC win on the year.

In the men's match, the deciding point came down to No. 6 singles as JSU freshman Felipe Wenzel won in a third-set thriller over Troy's Tadju.  After Tadju claimed the opening set,6-3, Wenzel bounced back to force a third and deciding set by winning 6-4 in the second set.  Tadju looked to close our the match after leading 5-3 in the third set, but the San Jose, Brazil-native stormed back to win 7-5 and clinch the match for JSU.

Jax State got off to a great start by winning the doubles point.  The Gamecocks' top-two pairings claimed wins for the point.  The team of Axel Sundberg and Nenad Marcec turned back Troy's duo of Anas Rouchdi and Anas Rouchdi, 8-4.  Igor Santos and Felipe Watanabe won by the identical score over the Trojan tandem of Jaime Eccleton and Tommy Cundy.

Santos and Marcec continued their stellar play with pivotal wins at No. 2 and 3 respectively.  Santos turned in a 7-6, 6-2 win over Sami Ghorbel.  Santos moved to 10-3 on the season and 10-2 at the No. 2 spot.  Marcec won his eighth consecutive singles match with a thumping of Marsingh Atthare, 6-3, 6-3.

Sundberg dropped a hard-fought three-set match to Anas Rouchdi.  Rouchdi won the first set 6-4, but Sundberg evened the match in the second set, winning 6-2.  He fell in the third set, 6-2.

In the women's match, Jax state's points came at No.3 and 6.  JSU junior Raphaela Lima ousted Troy's Olfa Dhaoui, 6-2, 6-1.  Freshman Danielle Kerindi, playing at No. 6 for the first time this season, notched a win over Ramirez Vega.  Kerindi won the first set 6-2 before Vega retired in the second set.

The JSU-EIU contest is set for 9 a.m. on Saturday.
