JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State softball team will open a six-game homestand this weekend at University Field, when the Gamecocks welcome Eastern Kentucky for a three-game Ohio Valley Conference series.
The Gamecocks (12-15, 7-1 OVC) will open the series with the Colonels (11-13, 4-1 OVC) on Saturday with a 1 p.m. doubleheader before wrapping it up with a 1p.m. single game on Sunday. They will then host a pair of mid-week home games during Spring Break next week, with Middle Tennessee visiting for a Tuesday doubleheader and Tennessee Tech for a Thursday single game. Admission is free for all home games.
JSU looks to continue its recent success. Since the start of OVC play, the Gamecocks have won eight of their last nine, including four ion a row. They swept an OVC twinbill at Tennessee Tech on Wednesday, thanks to a pair of gems in the circle from sophomore Tiffany Harbin and senior Sam Snow.
Harbin, a native of Hazel Green, Ala., enters the weekend with a streak of 20.1 consecutive scoreless innings, including complete-game shutouts of TTU and Murray State in her last two starts. She no-hit the Racers on Sunday before tossing a four-hit shutout of the Golden Eagles during the week. Snow, a Ranburne, Ala., native, is 2-0 with a save and a 0.62 ERA in three appearances in OVC play.
At the plate, junior Kelci Johnston has seen her bat come to life over the past few weeks. In OVC play, the Northport, Ala., native is batting .500 in 24 at bats, including a 5-for-8 afternoon in the doubleheader sweep at Tennessee Tech. Freshman Savannah Sloan is hitting .435 in league games, while senior Kristin Graham has driven in eight runs with a .429 average in the same stretch.
The Colonels, who led the OVC in hitting a year ago, have four players batting .333 or better, led by Diane Gallagher's .337 average. They are batting .273 as a team this season, with JSU hitting .274.
