CHARLESTON, Ill. – The Jacksonville State tennis teams swept Ohio Valley Conference foe Eastern Illinois on Saturday at the Rex Darling Tennis Courts. The JSU men won their third straight, while the Gamecock women earned their first conference win of the season.
The men's squad moved to 2-1 in OVC play with its 6-1 win over the Panthers. In the women's match, the deciding point came down to No. 6 with JSU coming out in top, 4-3.
Sophomore Alexsandra Cmilijic turned back EIU's Kristen Laird at No. 6 to clinch the match for Jax State. Cmilijic claimed the first set 7-5 before battling Laird in a 6-3 second-set win. The Subotica, Serbia-native moved to 3-1 at No. 6 and her second consecutive win against league competition.
JSU put the first point on the scoreboard by claiming the doubles point. The Gamecock tandem of
Rafaela Wenzel and
Zoe Bizinos edged EIU's duo of Amanda Dibbs and Annie Egan, 9-8. Jax State's pairing of
Kelly Tomlin and Cmilijic bounced Sephora Boulbahaiem and Laird, 8-3.
Bizinos, a freshman from Port Elizabeth, South Africa carried the momentum from doubles into her singles match at No. 4 against Dibbs. She won in straight sets – 6-3, 6-4. Bizinos improved to 3-1 in OVC matches.
Raphaela Lima topped Boulbahaiem – 6-3, 6-0.
In the men's match, the Gamecocks dropped the doubles point after EIU won at No. 2 and 3. JSU's top team of
Axel Sundberg and
Nenad Marcec made quick work of EIU's pairing of Matyas Hilgert and Michael Sperry, 8-2. The Sundberg and Marcec pairing moved to 8-6 on the season and winners of their last three matches.
JSU rebounded in singles in a superb way by sweeping all six singles matches to win the match. Sundberg matched up with Sperry at No. 1 singles and ousted him – 6-2, 6-2. Marcec won the tie breaker 7-6 in the first set with Jamie Firth and posted a 6-0 win in the second set.
Igor Santos remained unbeaten in conference play and 11-3 overall on the season.

Felipe Wenzel all won in straight sets to complete the singles sweep.
Both squads return to OVC action on Sunday as they travel to Edwardsville, Ill. for a tilt with SIU Edwardsville.
