MOREHEAD, Ky. – The Jacksonville State softball team dropped both games of its series opening doubleheader at Morehead State on Saturday, falling 4-1 in the opener before losing a 10-2 decision in the nightcap.
Junior Krystal Ruth went 3-for-5 with a single, double, triple and an RBI for the Gamecocks (15-20, 9-5 Ohio Valley Conference), but they couldn't get much more going on offense on a day that saw the Eagles (10-18, 4-9 OVC) score 14run and amass 19 hits.
In the opener, the Gamecocks grabbed an early 1-0 lead with a second-inning single from junior Jessica Guy that scored freshman Savannah Sloan after her leadoff single. The Eagles used a two-rn third and a two-run fourth to grab control of the game and held JSU in check from that point.
RBI from Elizabeth Wagner and Amber Riddle in the third gave MSU its first lead of the day and the Eagles then used back-to-back run-scoring hits from Anna Sommer and Adrena Anderson to add the fourth-inning insurance. JSU put at least one runner on base in each of the last four innings but couldn't get any more runs across.
Ruth, a native of Wylie, Texas, went 2-for-2 with a walk in the loss.
Sophomore Tiffany Harbin (7-4) suffered the loss in the circle after allowing four runs on seven hits in six innings of work. The Hazel Green, Ala., native struck out two and walked two. Katie Pfost (3-7) earned the win after limiting the JSU offense to a run on seven hits in seven innings.
In the nightcap, the Gamecocks struck first again in the second inning. This time they used a leadoff single from Sloan to set up and RBI triple from Ruth and an RBI double from Guy. Morehead State bounced back in even larger fashion this time, grabbing six runs in a fourth inning that saw six hits and two JSU errors.
The Eagles got three more in the fifth and another in the sixth to end the game and hand senior Sam Snow (5-5) her first loss in OVC play. The Ranburne, Ala., native gave up nine runs, six earned, on nine hits in four innings in the circle.
Jami Whitcomb (5-4) grabbed the win after allowing two runs on four hits in six innings or work.
The Gamecocks will try to grab a win out of the three-game series on Sunday, when the two wrap it up with a 12 p.m. CT game.
