MOREHEAD, Ky. – Jessica Guy and Sara Borders each recorded three hits to lead the Jacksonville State softball team to a 7-4 win over Morehead State in Sunday's series finale.
Guy, a junior from Vancouver, Wash., and Borders, a freshman from Alexandria, Ala., each went 3-for-4 for the Gamecocks (16-20, 10-5 Ohio Valley Conference) to help them salvage the final game in the series at the Eagles (10-19, 4-10 OVC).
Guy reached in all four plate appearances, including a two-run single in the first that jump-started the Gamecocks to an early 3-0 lead. She singled again in the third and doubled before scoring in the fifth. Borders started the game with a leadoff triple and finished with singles in the fifth and sixth frames.
Borders Triple started the first and Guy's single finished it, just before the Eagles plated one in the bottom half of the inning. A two-out solo home run from senior Kaycee Crow staked JSU to a 4-1 lead in the third, but MSU would rally to tie it in the bottom of the same frame. Back-to-back doubles from Kayla Ashbrook and Kayla Brill evened the game at 4-4, but not for long.
The Gamecocks jumped back on top for good in their ensuing at bat, when back-to-back singles from Borders and freshman Savannah Sloan set up a costly throwing error by MSU centerfielder Elizabeth Wagner that plated Borders from second.
JSU grabbed two more in the fifth, the first on a double from sophomore Hayden Crawford that scored Guy, and the second on a single from Borders that drove in Crawford.
Sophomore Tiffany Harbin (8-4) pitched a complete game to earn the win in the circle for JSU. The Hazel Green, Ala., native allowed four runs, three earned, on nine hits, while striking out four.
Brittni Champan (0-2) suffered the loss in two innings of relief for MSU, allowing three runs, two earned, on four hits. Jami Whitcomb started the game and surrendered four runs on six hits in the first 2.2 innings.
JSU will be in action at University Field on Wednesday, when the Gamecocks host Tennessee State in an OVC doubleheader at 3 p.m. Admission is free.
