GADSDEN, Ala. - The Jacksonville State men's tennis team closed out its home schedule with a 4-3 win over Mercer on Wednesday at the Gadsden Tennis Center.
JSU moved to 10-12 on the season and avenges a 5-2 loss to the Bears of Mercer earlier this season in Macon, Ga. The win gives the Gamecocks momentum as they close out the regular season on Sunday, April 15 at Tennessee State.
Junior
Nenad Marcec, who was celebrating a birthday on Wednesday, clinched the match for Jax State after turning in a 6-2, 6-0 win over Mercer's David Barton at No. 3 singles. The win was his 15th of the season at No. 3 and the Belgrade, Serbia-native has won eight of his last ten matches.
Marcec was also apart of a pivotal doubles match at No. 1. After the two teams split at No. 2 and 3, the key doubles point came down to Marcec and
Axel Sundberg match with MU's David Barton and Victor Dias. The JSU duo won the tie breaker to post a 9-8 win. At No. 2 doubles,
Jordan Cowling and
Igor Santos continued their win streak to eight straight with an 8-2 victory.
Sundberg carried the momentum into singles play as he made quick work of Peter Tauchner - 6-1, 6-1. Freshman
Felipe Wenzel added a point to the team score at No. 6 after defeating MU's Elbert Beekman - 6-0, 6-3.
The JSU-TSU match on Sunday is scheduled to get underway ay 2 p.m. on the TSU campus.
