NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Jacksonville State's men's and women's tennis teams wrapped up the regular season with wins over Tennessee State on Sunday. The JSU men claimed a 6-1 win, while the Gamecock women blanked TSU, 7-0.
The victory by the women's squad was bittersweet as they will not advance to next week's Ohio Valley Conference Tournament. JSU and Morehead State finished with 4-5 OVC marks, but the Eagles received the final berth in the post season event due to their win over Jax State earlier in the season. MSU knocked off Austin Peay on Sunday at home.
The JSU men solidified the No. 4 seed in the men's OVC Tournament that will begin on Friday, April 20 in Nashville, Tenn. They will begin their quest for an OVC Championship at 10 a.m. on Friday against Morehead State. The OVC event will take place at Nashville's Centennial Sports Complex.
In the men's duel, JSU swept the doubles point, including a win by default as TSU did not have a doubles team at No. 3. The Gamecock duo of
Jordan Cowling and
Igor Santos moved to 6-1 against OVC competition with an 8-1 win at No. 2. Cowling and Santos extended their win streak to eight straight matches and have won nine of of their last ten doubles matches. They finish the regular season at 12-5 on the season.
Axel Sundberg and
Nenad Marcec topped TSU's pairing of Lawrence Washington and Shaun Ingram, 8-5.
The Gamecocks carried the momentum into singles play as they won five of the six singles matches. Santos, Marcec and Cowling combined to give up just one game to the Tigers among the three players. Santos, moved back to the No. 2 spot, blanked Ingram, 6-0, 6-0. With the win, Santos put together a 7-0 OVC mark at No. 2 and 7-1 overall in OVC play. Marcec turned back William Simmons, 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3. He heads into the post season having an 8-2 record over the past ten matches. Cowling quick worked Jared Asher, 6-0, 6-0 for his sixth conference win of the season. TSU lone point came at No. 1 as Sundberg split the first two sets against Washington, before falling in the third set, 10-8.
In the women's match, Jax State swept the doubles point to gain the early advantage over TSU. The dominance continued in singles as four Gamecocks won in straight sets - 6-0, 6-0.
Raphaela Lima ousted London Thomas at No. 2. Playing in her final match as a member of the JSU squad, senior
Rafaela Wenzel won in ease 6-0, 6-0 over Lauren Thomas.
Danielle Kerindi and Aleksandra Cmilijic recorded 6-0, 6-0 wins at No. 5 and 6 respectively.
Zoe Bizinos downed Kryston Mason, 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4, while
Raisa Guasti turned in a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 1.
