BIRMINGHAM – Griff Gordon had three hits and Stephen Bartlett hit his first home run of the year to lead Jacksonville State to a 7-4 win over UAB as the Gamecocks won their second straight game over the Blazers on Wednesday.
Taylor Shields (1-1) allowed just three hits and had a pair of strikeouts to earn his first win of the year, while Travis Stout picked up his first save of the year after recording the final out. UAB's Ruben Tresqallo (0-1) suffered the loss after allowing three runs in just 1 1/3 innings.
Jax State (2-3) jumped out to the early lead after Michael Bishop walked to lead off the game and scored when Gordon hit a triple to right center to give JSU a 1-0 lead.
Andrew Bishop led off the second inning with a walk and Bartlett followed with a two-run home run to left field as the Gamecocks extended the lead to 3-0.
Jax State pushed across four more runs in the third inning, thanks to a couple of Blazer errors and an Andrew Bishop sacrifice fly that gave the Gamecocks a 7-0 lead.
The Blazers tried to rally in the ninth inning off of Gamecock reliever Bradley Raulston after scoring four runs on three hits, before Stout was brought into the game for the final margin.
Paschal Petrongolo and Bartlett each had two hits to go with the three hits by Gordon to lead the Gamecocks.
