
Gamecock Tennis Sweeps Opening Weekend of OVC Play

JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State men's and women's tennis team squads made quick work of Tennessee State on Sunday as both teams blanked the visiting Tigers, 7-0 at the JSU Tennis Courts.
Coupled with Saturday's wins over Belmont, both the JSU men and women move to 2-0 in Ohio Valley Conference action. The win was the fourth consecutive for the Gamecock men, who improved to 6-9 on the season. The JSU moved to 7-8 overall and have won three straight matches.
In the men's match, Jax State took an early 2-0 lead as TSU defaulted matches at No. 5 and No. 6. In the four singles matched that were played, JSU lost just six games total. Senior Nenad Marcec and sophomore Felipe Diaz posted a pair of 6-0, 6-0 wins at No. 3 and 4. Both Marcec and Diaz have carded four consecutive wins in singles play. Senior Axel Sundberg turned in a 6-0, 6-1 win over TSU's Branden McClain. At No. 1, senior Igor Santos topped Daniel Bernal – 6-4, 6-1 to complete the scoring.
In doubles, Jax State's tandem of Sundberg and Marcec quick-worked McClain and Bernal, 8-0. Santos and Felipe Wenzel ousted Jared Asher and William Simmons. JSU won by default at No. 3 doubles.
The women's match started in similar fashion to the men's match as JSU picked up a pair of wins after TSU defaulted at No. 5 and No. 6. JSU dropped just one game in the four singles matches and won 8-0 decisions at No. 1 and 2 doubles.
Raisa Guasti defeated TSU's Shardel Suber 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 to move to 8-7 overall on the season. At No. 2, Raphael Lima registered a 6-0, 6-1 victory over London Thomas. Olivia Nguyen and Zoe Bizinos blanked their respective opponents 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 and 4.
Guasti and Lima picked up a win at No. 1 doubles over Shuber and Attallah Eiland. Bizinos and Nguyen tallied their third consecutive win at No. 2.
JSU continues OVC play with a trip to Cookeville, Tenn. for the men's team to face Tennessee Tech on Thursday, March 21. The Gamecock women return to OVC play against UT Martin on Saturday, March 23. The match will be played in Cape Girardeau, Mo. as JSU will take on Southeast Missouri on March 24.
