
Gamecock Tennis Suffers First OVC Setback

RICHMOND, Ky. – The Jacksonville State men's and women's tennis squads dropped their first Ohio Valley Conference match to Eastern Kentucky on Friday on the EKU campus.
The Colonels topped the Gamecocks, 5-2, while the EKU women downed JSU 7-0. Jax State, who has been idle on spring break, moved to 3-1 in the league on the women's side. The JSU men fell to 2-1 against the OVC with the setback.
In the men's contest, Senior Igor Santos and senior Axel Sundberg won their matches over EKU's top-two players. Santos turned back EKU Daridge Saidi – 6-4, 6-2 at the top spot. Santos remained spotless in the OVC by moving to 3-0 in singles play. Sundberg won in a three set marathon after the Colonels had clinched the match. After falling 6-3 in the opening set to Alex Alvaro, Sundberg bounced back to win in a second-set tiebreaker, 7-6 and a 12-10 super tie breaker in the final set.
EKU clinched the match after Joao Maio posted a 6-3, 6-4 win over JSU''s Felipe Wenzel. Nenad Marcec, Felipe Wenzel and Felipe Watanabe all lost in hard fought matches.
Jax State's No. 1 doubles tandem was victorious over EKU's pairing of Saidi and Alvaro, 8-5. Santos and Wenzel fell to EKU's Juanjo De La Llera and Maio, 9-8 (5).
The EKU women started strong and never let up as they claimed the doubles point by notching a pair of 8-2 wins at No. 1 and No. 2 respectively. EKU carried that momentum into singles play by winning in straight sets at all six courts. Junior Raisa Guasti dropped a 6-1, 6-0 match to Amandine Faouzi at No. 1. Raphaela Lima fell to Kristina Labeja – 6-1, 6-1. Freshman Olivia Nguyen battled Milena Poffo before falling – 6-2, 6-1.
Zoe Bizinos, Danielle Kerindi, and Kelly Tomlin dropped matches at their respective courts.
The Gamecocks return to OVC action on Saturday as they face Morehead State. Match time is set for 1 p.m.
