JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State softball team heads into a big weekend of Ohio Valley Conference play, one that will see the Gamecocks host a pair of doubleheaders with Austin Peay and Murray State at University Field.
The Gamecocks (16-11, 3-0 OVC) will play a pair of games against Austin Peay on Saturday before concluding the weekend with a twinbill with Murray State on Sunday. On both days, the first game will start at 1 p.m. CT.
The Gamecocks opened league play last week with a three-game sweep of Tennessee State that saw junior
Tiffany Harbin have an impressive weekend in the circle.
The Hazel Green, Ala., native tossed the fourth no-hitter of her career to open the series on Saturday before capping it with a complete-game shutout on Sunday. She leads the team with a 9-4 record and holds a team-best 2.51 earned run average. She has also struck out 126 batters so far in 2013 to run her career total to 569, second in school history and just 66 shy of Ann Shelton's school record of 635.
At the plate, sophomore
Sara Borders has been red hot of late, boosting her batting average to a team-leading .366. The Alexandria, Ala., native leads the OVC with 11 doubles and is a big reason the Gamecocks are fourth in the nation with an average of 2.12 doubles per game. Borders' 0.42 doubles per game ranks her 19th nationally.
Austin Peay enters the weekend with a 9-10 record but is 0-3 in the OVC after dropping all three games of a home series with Eastern Illinois last week. Laurel Burroughs leads the Lady Govs with a .421 average, while Kayla Davidson is batting .404. Lauren De Castro leads APSU in the circle with a 5-4 record and a 2.62 ERA.
Murray State heads into the weekend with a 6-13 record and is 1-1 in league play after splitting shortened series with Southeast Missouri last week. The Racers will play two games at Tennessee Tech on Saturday before making the trip down to JSU. Shelbey Miller leads the Racers with a .353 average, while Casey Castille's .344 clip is second.
