BIRMINGHAM – Ivan DeJesus had three hits to lead UAB to an 8-2 win over Jacksonville State at Young Memorial Field in a game called after seven innings due to rain.
James Naile (3-3) allowed just two hits over the final three innings to earn the win for the Blazers. JSU's Casey Antley (4-3) gave up six runs, just three earned, in only 1 2/3 innings to suffer the loss for the Gamecocks.
Michael Bishop led off the game with a double for the Gamecocks and advanced to second base after Adam Miller grounded out to short stop. Griff Gordon then drove in Bishop with a deep fly out to center field to give the Gamecocks an early 1-0 lead.
The Blazers bounced back in the bottom half of the first, scoring three runs with two outs remaining off two JSU errors in the wet field conditions.
UAB added to its lead in the second inning with three more runs to take a 6-1 lead. Jeff Schalk and Jacob German led off with back-to-back singles and then both advanced after Wes Kent's sacrifice bunt. Schalk then scored off De Jesus' single to center field to put runners on the corners. Antley struck out a UAB batter for the second out before throwing consecutive wild pitches to score another Blazer run.
The Gamecocks picked up a run in the third inning to cut the lead to 6-2 after Ty Pierce drew a walk with one out and then advanced to third base off Bishop's second hit of the game. Adam Miller then scored Pierce with a sacrifice fly to center.
The Blazers picked up two more runs in the bottom of the sixth after Schalk scored on Kent's RBI single and DeJesus' then doubled in another run for the final margin.
Bishop led Jax State at the plate after getting two of the Gamecocks' four hits in the game.
The Gamecocks will have this weekend off before returning to action next Tuesday in a midweek game at Troy, before hosting UAB at Rudy Abbott Field next Wednesday.
