JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State men's and women's tennis teams closed out the 2013 home schedule with a split against Mercer as the JSU women topped the Bears, 4-3, while MU claimed a 5-2 win over the Gamecocks.
Jax State heads into the final weekend of the regular season with a 12-10 overall mark on the women's side, while the men's team stands at 9-12 on the season. Both squads travel to Murray State and Austin Peay on Saturday, April 13 and 14 respectively with Ohio Valley Conference Tennis Championship seeding on the line.
Tuesday's match also marked the final home contest for six JSU seniors. On the men's squad, seniors Igor Santos, Nenad Marcec, Axel Sundberg and Felipe Watanabe closed out their careers on the JSU Tennis Courts. Seniors Kelly Tomlin and Raphaela Lima played on the home courts for the final time. All six were honored prior to Tuesday's duel.
On senior day, the women's match came down to a freshman playing at No. 6. JSU inserted Isidora Knezevic in to the line up and she clinched the match with a 6-0, 7-6 win over Amanda Bertani . It was just her fourth time to play singles this season and improved to 2-2 on the season. The Gamecocks took care of MU in doubles by claiming wins at No. 1 and 3. JSU's top tandem of Raisa Guasti and Lima topped Isabel Dennis and Lucie Payrat, 8-6, at No. 1. The duo of Zoe Bizinos and Taylor Lefton registered their first win together by out-lasting MU's Liza Klyachkin and Bertani.
Sophomore Danielle Kerindi won in straight sets over Klyachkin, 6-2, 6-3 at No. 3. Guasti moved to 12-9 on the season with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Payrat. Tomlin dropped a tough three set match to Roxy Bartz.
In the men's match, took the early lead with the doubles point and continued the momentum in singles play. JSU's pair of points came at No. 1 and No. 4 singles. Santos needed little time to put away Peter Tauchner, 6-0, 6-1. Santos is an impressive 9-5 at No. 1 and has won seven of his last 10 matches.
Sophomore Felipe Wenzel won a two-set affair over Arsay Mohanty 6-2, 7-6 for the second Jax State point.
JSU's match with Murray State on Saturday is set for 10 a.m.
