RICHMOND, Ky. – Kenny Hostrander had five hits and scored three runs as Eastern Kentucky avoided the three-game Ohio Valley Conference sweep with a 14-6 win over Jacksonville State on Sunday afternoon.
Matt Lynch (1-5) scattered five hits and allowed six runs in 5 1/3 innings to pick up his first win of the season for the Colonels. Tony Urban (3-2) gave up four runs in just 1 2/3 innings to suffer the loss for the Gamecocks.
The Gamecocks took a 1-0 lead in the first inning after Michael Bishop led the game off with a walk, stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch. Adam Miller followed with a sacrifice fly to right field to score Bishop to give JSU the early lead.
Eastern Kentucky tied the game in the home half of the first after scoring an unearned run and then took its first lead of the series in the second as Luke Wurzelbacher, Kyle Nowlin and Doug Teegarden each drove in a run for a 4-1 lead.
Jax State cut the lead to 4-2 in the third as Gavin Golsan reached on a one-out double and scored after Bishop singled to left center, but EKU answered in the home half of the inning.
The Colonels added three runs in the third, highlighted by a two-run home run by Austin Grisham, and scored two more in the fourth as Shaun Ball hit a two-run homer for a 9-2 lead.
Jax State scored a run in the fifth after Gavin Golsan was hit by a pitch and Bishop followed with a double to right field to score Golsan and cut the lead to 9-3, but the Colonels added an unearned run in the fifth to build a 10-3 lead.
The Gamecocks cut into the lead in the sixth inning after Paschal Petrongolo walked and Eddie Mora-Loera doubled to lead off the inning, before Andrew Bishop scored Petrongolo on a sacrifice fly. Stephen Barlett followed with a RBI single and later scored on Michael Bishop's second straight double of the game to cut the lead to 10-6, but JSU would get no closer.
Eastern Kentucky added three runs in the sixth, and a run in the seventh on Solomon's second home run of the day for the final margin. The Colonels finished with 18 hits, led by Hostrander's five hits, Ball's three hits, while Teegarden, Soloman and Wurzelbacher each had two hits.
Michael Bishop led the Gamecocks with three hits and three RBIs, while Bartlett added two hits.
Jacksonville State returns to action with a game at Auburn on Tuesday, before wrapping up the regular-season against Morehead State with a three-game Ohio Valley Conference series against Morehead State beginning on Thursday.
