JSU Women Close Palmetto State Trip With a Setback To College of Charleston

CHARLESTON, S.C. -  The Jacksonville State women's tennis team dropped its final match of a four-match road trip over the spring break holiday as the Gamecocks dropped a 6-1 decision to College of Charleston on Saturday.

The weather played havoc for the Gamecocks on Saturday as the match was delayed throughout the day and singles matches were played first prior to doubles.  With the loss, JSU fell to 6-12 on the season with one non conference match remaining on the docket.  The Cougars, ranked No. 72 in the country, improved to 15-6 overall.

The lone bright spot for Jax State on Saturday was the play of senior Raisa Guasti.  Guasti turned in the lone Gamecock point after dispatching CofC's Brooke McAmis in a three set contest.  She opened the match with a 6-3 opening set win, but McAmis bounced back to win 6-1 in the second set to force a decisive third set.  Guasti topped McAmis 6-4 to win her 11th match of the season and her seventh in the last ten matches.
Sophomore Olivia Nguyen suffered a three set loss at No. 3 as she fell to Samantha Maddox of CofC.  Maddox claimed the first set before Nguyen regrouped for a win in the second set.  Maddox finished off the match with a 10-4 third set victory.  Claudia Marsala dropped a straight sets affair to Mara Argyriou, while sophomore Isidora Knezevic lost at No. 4 in just her second time at that spot in the line up.

In doubles, it was a clean sweep for the Cougars after winning all three matches.  Guasti and Danielle Kerindi played together for the first time this season at No. 1.  The JSU pairing lost 6-2 to Katherine Schofield and Jenny Falcone.

The Gamecocks return home on April 2, hosting in-state rival Troy at the JSU Tennis Courts.  Match time is set for 1:30 p.m.
