CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Jacksonville State scored eight runs in the first four innings, but could not hold on as Austin Peay erased an 8-1 deficit to even the Ohio Valley Conference series with a 10-8 win on Sunday at Raymond Hand C. Park.
The loss drops the Gamecocks to 8-7 overall and 1-4 in league play. The Govs pushed their overall mark to 10-5 and 4-1 against OVC competition. The rubber game of the three-game series is set for Monday at 1 p.m. on the APSU campus.
After claiming Saturday's series opener 8-2, Jax State's bats continued to string together hits and get timely two-out hitting. JSU jumped on the Govs in the second with five runs to chase APSU's starter, Caleb Powell. Junior
Paul Angel drove in the first Gamecock run with a sacrifice fly and after an
Elliot McCummings line out, JSU's key two-out hitting started to click again as it would score four runs after two outs in the inning. The big hit in the frame came off the bat of senior catcher
Daniel Gaither. Gaither belted a double to the left center gap to score two runs. Senior
Ryan Sebra plated the fifth run of the inning.
JSU expanded the lead in its next at bat with two runs in the third. For the second consecutive inning, the Gamecocks did their damage after two outs in the inning. McCummings had his second double of the weekend with a knock to the gap in left. JSU had five of its eight RBI with two outs and was 6-of-14 at the dish with two outs. Gavin Golsan, who started the frame with a double and then quickly swiped third base.

Tony Urban turned in a solid outing as he tossed five complete innings and kept the Govs' bats at bay. Urban finished with five strike outs and gave up seven hits and four earned runs.
APSU, one of the top offensive teams in the league proved that in the final four innings as they scored multiple runs in three of its final plate appearances. After a solo shot to center in the third by APSU's Clayton Smithson to get the Govs on the board, they would plate two in the fourth and two in the sixth to get the deficit to 8-5.
APSU rallied in the seventh to equalize with three runs off of just two hits off of Sebra, who moved from third to the hill. Cayce Bredlau and Ridge Smith had the pair of hits and Smith produced the lone RBI in the frame. APSU plated the tying run off of a wild pitch.
With a new ball game, JSU started the eighth with a leadoff double, but could not score the go-ahead run.
With momentum from the previous two innings, the Govs took their first lead of the weekend on a sacrifice fly from Alex Robles along with a JSU throwing miscue to plate the 10
th run. Sebra was saddled with the loss (1-1), while Hunter Lindley earned the win. APSU's Levi Primasing notched the save. The Govs used seven pitchers in the contest.
