FLORENCE, Ala. – Jacksonville State renewed its longtime rivalry with North Alabama on Tuesday in tennis as the JSU women posted their fourth consecutive win. The JSU-UNA men's match was halted due to lightning in the area.
The Gamecock women turned in a 5-0 win, while the Jax State men were ahead 3-2 before the weather stopped the action on the UNA campus. The match was scored as an NCAA Division II match as each court in doubles counts as a point.
JSU's No. 2 tandem of
Zoe Bizinos and
Diana Mirceta quickly turned in the first point of the match with an 8-1 win over UNA's duo of Natalia San Jose Moreno and Avery King.
Claudia Marsala and
Genevie Ulanday turned back the Lions' team of Olivera Ngouabeu and Natalia Barragan, 8-3, at No. 1. The final doubles point came after JSU's pairing of
Danielle Kerindi and
Sadey St. Amant carded an 8-3 score over Morgan Jose and Sydney Childers.
The Red and White clinched the match with two quick wins at No. 3 and No. 6. Bizinos recorded another win on the day with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Moreno at No. 3. Playing in her first match of the season, freshman
Courtney Conley won at No. 6 in straight sets (6-0, 6-1) over Childers.
The rain halted the rest of the singles matches.
In the men's affair, Jax State won two of the three doubles points.
Dylan Gee and
Mathias Chaim teamed up at No. 2 to oust UNA's Max Druppel and Taylor Ausbon, 8-6.
Jefferson Wendler-Filho and
Gabriel Pansera were tested at No. 3 as the tandem outlasted the Lions' duo of Miguel Garcia and Jonathan Vick, 9-8(5).
Gee tallied the third point with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Brendon Millington-Herrmann at No. 2.
