
Gamecock Softball Set to Open Season Friday in Savannah

SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Jacksonville State softball team will get the 2016 season underway this weekend in the inaugural Savannah State Lady Tiger Classic, beginning Friday at 9 a.m. CT against Western Carolina.
The Gamecocks, looking for their eighth Ohio Valley Conference trophy in just their 13th season in the league, will also face the host Lady Tigers at 12 p.m. CT on Friday. They will face College of Charleston at 4 p.m. CT on Saturday before wrapping up the weekend against Drexel at 11 a.m. CT on Sunday.
Jax State has 13 returning letter winners from last season, led by seniors Casey Akenberger, Ella Denes and Cadi Oliver. On the 2016 roster is also a group of six freshmen and one junior college transfer.
Denes is the team's leading returning hitter after batting .352 with eight homers, 13 doubles and 36 RBI in her All-OVC campaign of 2015. Oliver hit .312 with eight homers, 12 doubles and 33 RBI last season. Junior Stephanie Lewis boasted a .336 average a year ago.
Sophomore Whitney Gillespie is JSU's leading power hitter back from last season, when she belted nine round trippers and drove in 23 runs. Sophomore Emily Woodruff's .317 average and sophomore Jordan Bullock's .309 clip round out a group of six returning players that hit over .300 last season.
In the circle, junior Taylor West returns after going 13-5 with a 2.66 ERA and 115 strikeouts. She tossed 14 complete games in 29 starts.
