Women's BoxSTATESBORO, Ga. – The Jacksonville State men's team recorded a 4-3 win over Nicholls State, while the Gamecock women fell to the NCAA Division II top-ranked team Armstrong State on the opening day of the Georgia Southern Invitational.
JSU men improved to 4-8 overall on the season and the women dropped to 2-9 on the season.
In the men's match, JSU got off to a great start by winning the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and 3. The JSU duo of
Austin McCormick and
Jaryd Reese posted a 6-3 win over NSU's Evan Karatzas and Max Sinn. Jax State clinched the point at No. 3 after
Mathias Chaim and
Pedro Wagner topped Sam Meessen and Bernard Wezeman.
Chaim and Wagner would figure in to the final team score with wins in the top-two singles matches. Chaim disposed of Kieran Cronin at No. 2 in straight sets – 6-1, 7-5. With the match all knotted at three, Wagner's three-set win at No. 1 clinched the match for the Gamecocks. Wagner claimed the opening set, 6-4, but dropped the second set by the identical score. The senior sealed the deal with a 6-4 third set win.
Freshman
Andres Gomez won in three sets over Oscar Reeve at No. 6.
In the women's match against the No. 1 team in NCAA Division II, Armstrong won all nine matches. The match was played under Division II scoring rules with each match counting as a point. ASU quick-worked JSU at all three doubles matches and that dominance continued in singles play. The Gamecocks picked up just nine games-won. JSU's
Claudia Marsala fell in straight sets to No. 4 Lena Lutzeier at No. 2. ASU's third player, the top-ranked player in Division II, Alejandra Cisneros downed JSU's
Diana Mirceta, 6-1, 6-0.
The men's squad will face host-Georgia Southern on Sunday, while the women will take on Nicholls State on Saturday.
