JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State softball team welcomes No. 2 Alabama to University Field for the first time since 2003 on Wednesday, when the Gamecocks and Crimson Tide face off at 5 p.m.
The Gamecocks (7-7) will take on the Crimson Tide (15-1) in JSU's fourth game against a top 15 foe in the past two weeks. Tickets can be purchased online at www.jsugamecocksports.com and fans are encouraged to arrive early.
Alabama was scheduled to open last year's JSU home schedule, but rain and snow canceled the game. This year's game day forecast calls for clear skies with temperatures holding around 50 degrees at first pitch. It is expected to be in the low 40s by the end of the game.
Jax State is coming off a 2-2 weekend at the La Tech Classic that saw them split games on Friday and Saturday. Senior pitcher Casey Akenberger and freshman first baseman Hayley Sims earned all-tournament honors over the weekend, which also saw Akenberger claim Ohio Valley Conference Pitcher of the Week honors.
Wednesday's game marks the home opener for JSU and the start of a home-heavy stretch on the Gamecocks schedule. They play four of the next five games at University Field over the next seven days, including a doubleheader against Samford on Saturday at 1 p.m. Twelve of JSU's next 16 games will be played in the friendly confines of University Field, where fans 18 and under receive free admission.
Wednesday will mark the 17th meeting between JSU and Alabama on the softball diamond and just the fourth in Jacksonville. The Gamecocks are looking for their first win over the Crimson Tide in the series.
Senior Ella Denes leads the Gamecock offense with a .405 average and is tied with Sims and fellow senior Cadi Oliver for the team lead with two homers. Junior Emily Church's 10 RBI are a team high.
Akenberger ran her record to 2-1 after her big week that also saw her earned run average dip to 3.13. Freshman Kirsten Titus leads the JSU staff with a 3.06 ERA.
Just over a week after JSU faced No. 1 Florida in Disney World, the Gamecocks get to test themselves against the No. 2 team in Alabama. The Crimson Tide moved up two spots to the second spot on Tuesday after a 4-0 weekend at its annual Bama Bash Tournament. Bama picked up two wins over then-No. 16 Arizona, one over then-No. 19 Tennessee and another over Marshall.
Andrea Hawkins leads the Tide at the plate with a .444 average, while Peyton Grantham's three homers and 20 RBI are both team bests. Madi Moore and Alexis Osario are both 5-0 in the circle, while Moore's 1.34 earned run average is tops on the UA staff.
The game will be broadcast online through the OVC Digital Network, which is available for free at www.jsugamecocksports.com.
