JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State softball team will host a busy two days of Ohio Valley Conference play this weekend, starting with a Good Friday doubleheader vs. Eastern Illinois at 1 p.m.
The Gamecocks (13-13, 3-0 OVC) bring a season-best four-game winning streak into back-to-back twinbills against the league's two Illinois members. The two games with EIU on Friday will be followed by another doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m. vs. SIU-Edwardsville. Admission is free for JSU students and all fans ages 18 and under.
Jax State is coming off a 12-3 mercy-rule win at Alabama State on Wednesday that saw the Gamecocks rack up 16 hits, seven for extra bases. Last weekend, they opened conference play with a three-game sweep of preseason favorite Tennessee Tech at University Field.
Sophomore Whitney Gillespie has stepped up in the circle for JSU, earing two wins and a save in the sweep of TTU. She started the game at ASU and tossed a scoreless first before exiting the circle with an 11-0 lead in the middle of the second.
At the plate, Gillespie also belted her second home run of the year on Wednesday, one of three JSU homers in the game. Junior Emily Church hit her team-leading fourth homer in the game, while freshman Anna Chisolm belted her first career round tripper, a pinch-hit solo shot.
Senior Ella Denes leads the way for the JSU offense with a .381 average and is tied with Gillespie for the team lead with seven doubles. The leadoff batter's 18 RBI are second to Church's 20.
Gillespie boasts a team-best 1.75 earned run average in the circle and is limiting opponents to a .198 average. She has 28 strikeouts in 28.0 innings pitched. Senior Casey Akenberger is 6-2 in the circle with a 2.50 ERA.
The Panthers come into Friday with a 3-0 conference record after sweeping UT Martin last week to open OVC play. They are led at the plate by Katie Watson's .293 average, while Kylie Bennett's five homers and 15 RBI also are tops on the team.
Jessica Wireman serves as the Panthers' ace in the circle, holding a 7-13 record and a 4.06 ERA. She and Michelle Rogers have combined to throw 166 of the team's 168 innings so far this season.
SIUE enters the weekend with a 2-1 OVC mark and will play at Tennessee Tech on Friday before heading to Jacksonville for Saturday's doubleheader.
