
JSU Softball Hosts Red Hot Kennesaw State Tuesday at 4 pm

JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State softball team will be at home Tuesday at 4 p.m. for a single game against a red hot Kennesaw State team.
With just over a week left before the start of Ohio Valley Conference play, the Gamecocks (8-10) look to get things going against an Owls (12-4) team that comes into University Field riding the second-best start in school history. They started the season by winning 10 of their first 11 before falling to Georgia State and twice to South Carolina last week.
Admission for the game is free for JSU students and all fans ages 18 and under. Tickets can be purchased in advance at www.jsugamecocksports.com.
Jax State went 1-3 last week, but dropped a midweek contest to No. 2 Alabama that saw JSU with the go-ahead run at the plate in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Gamecocks then dropped two-of-three to rival Samford over the weekend.'
JSU bumped its batting average up to .285 over the last week and is led by junior Stephanie Lewis' .362 average. The Fort Meade, Fla., native is one of five Gamecocks batting at least .333 on the young season, just ahead of senior Ella Denes and junior Taylor Sloan, who each are batting .357.
Junior Emily Church is fifth on the team in batting average with a ,289 clip but has driven in 16 runs, seven more than the closest Gamecock.
In the circle, the Gamecocks have been looking for someone to step up from the foursome of Casey Akenberger, Taylor West, Kirsten Titus and Faith Sims. Akenberger, a senior from Bowling Green, Ohio, leads the staff with a 3.12 earned run average, while she and West both have a 3-2 record. West, a junior from Anniston, also has two saves and a team-high 33 strikeouts in 31 innings.
KSU is led at the plate by Missy Perkowski's .396 average, while Courtney Sutter's five homers are tops on the team. Ace Logan Viers boasts a 5-1 record in 14 starts and also holds a 1.46 ERA.
