JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State men's and women's team dropped Ohio Valley Conference matches to Eastern Kentucky on Friday at the JSU Tennis Courts.
The JSU men dropped a 6-1 decision, while the Gamecock women lost by the same score.
In the men's match, Jax State (6-11, 2-2 OVC) got off to a great start by winning the double point. JSU's No. 1 duo of Andres Gomez and Liu Shao Chun needed little time to put away EKU's pairing of Alex Alvaro and Sebastian Mueller, 6-1. The doubles point was clinched at No. 2 as Jax State's team of Austin McCormick and Jaryd Reese downed the Colonels' duo of Ramon van Flymen and Indra Patwardhan, 6-3.
EKU bounced back in singles by winning all six matches and taking the conference win on the road. Senior Pedro Wagner dropped a tough three set match after winning the first set over Flymen. Wagner won the opener 6-4, but then fell 6-1, 6-2 to Flymen. Freshman Vinicio Hadlich's match with Mueller mirrored Wagger's match. Hadlich posted a 6-2 win in the first set, but Mueller regrouped to win 6-2, 7-5.
In the women's contest, EKU quickly won the doubles point by winning at No. 1 and 2. JSU's (5-13, 2-2 OVC) pairing of Courtney Conley and Sadey St. Amant were knotted at 4-all against Corentine Bodin and Marina Marti when EKU sealed the point.
St. Amant notched Jax State's lone point at No. 4 singles. The Ocean Springs, Mississippi native ousted EKU's Margaux Lacroix, 6-3, 7-6.
The Gamecocks continue OVC activity on Saturday with a morning match against Morehead State. Match time is set for 11 a.m. at the JSU Tennis Courts.
